Making a difference - letter to parents
Dear Mum and Dad
We have been learning about rubbish and waste. We found out that glad wrap is bad for the environment.
We know glad wrap is bad for the environment because it does not rot away in the soil. We have decided in Community 7 to use containers, lunch paper, compartment lunch boxes or zip bags.
This will help the environment because there will be less glad wrap. We are now making posters in our classroom to tell the whole of West Melton school about our inquiry learning and what we found out.
We want to do this because we need to look after our school and not turn it into a rubbish dump!
Please can you start thinking about our environment too, let's all use containers!!!!!
From all the children in Community 7
***(This letter has been written by the children and typed by the teacher. We have been learning about letter writing)

Making a difference cond
In writing time we have been learning about letters. We are going to write a letter to each class at West Melton School telling them about the changes we have made to our lunch boxes. We will post a copy of one of the letters on our blog when we have finished them.
***Hello parents, we would love for you to post comments on our learning :)

Making a Difference
Here we are with Miss Clark posting a new blog about our learning.
Jack said "we are going to make a poster about our inquiry and put it up around the school"
Flynn said "our posters are going to have photos we have taken and words"
Sara said "it is going to be fun!"

Making the difference
We have decided that we can make more of a difference if we tell the whole school what we have been doing!!
We are going to have a brainstorm about this in our next inquiry lesson.

Inquiry learing - where we are now
We have decided to make a movie using photostory. We have been taking photos of our inquiry journey and will now use these to make the movie. All of us get a turn a speaking into a microphone! It is fun!We are going to share our movie with Learning Community 6.
In term 3 we are inviting the parents from our class to come and watch our movie. We will help Miss Clark to set up the data projector for this. Even though we are only 5 years old we know how to do this!

Blogging
Here we are in our 'Blog time'. We have been posting messages to the children in the other classes. It is fun!
Today we are going to tell you about the 'let's do it' stage of our inquiry journey.
We will do this later in the day because we need to do our story writing now!

Inquiry learning - let's do it!
We had to decide what we could do to make a difference.
All of us looked at our lunch boxes and found LOTS of gladwrap!
We thought about what else we could use to bring our food in.
Some of us decided that lunch paper would be good to wrap sandwiches in.
We decided that the zip bags would be good to bring our food in. (Even though zip bags are plastic they can be used again and again and again)
The best idea was to have a lunch box with compartments. Elle had one of these so she showed it to the class. Thank you for sharing this with us Elle :)

We used our green thinking hat to design this lunch box with compartments.
We then had to write a letter to our parents letting them know what we were learning in class and what difference we wanted to make.
We had to remind each other everyday about what we wanted to achieve.

Inquiry learning - what now?
What can we do with all this information?
Community 7 decided to try and bring less plastic to school.
We looked at how we were wrapping our food in school lunch boxes.

Inquiry learning - wonderings and discoveries
We asked lots of questions about 'Waste'
eg
I wonder why the glad wrap did not go away?
I wonder why the banana skin went away quickly?
I wonder how much rubbish goes to the dump from our school?
I wonder how can we have less rubbish?

Inquiry learning - big ideas
As part of our inquiry learning we looked at the different types of rubbish in our school. We found that there was a lot of rubbish in the playground. There was lots of plastic. We decided to bury some of this rubbish. We buried a banana skin, a flower, newspaper, glad wrap, a plastic drink bottle and a whole apple.
We dug up this rubbish every week for 6 weeks.
We found that the banana skin, the flower, the apple and newspaper rotted away.
All the plastic remained! We decided this was bad for our environment.
All the plastic we buried was still there after 6 weeks.
